My Topic and Why I Chose It:
I chose the topic of why direct care workers should be kept above minimum wage as it rises. Minimum wage is rising to $10.10 by the year 2018. Direct Care staff are left wondering if all of the hard work they do day in and day out will leave them at a minimum wage job. They are currently compensated at an average of 35 % above minimum wage. I chose to write about this topic because not only does it affect me, but it affects all of the wonderful individuals that I take care of everyday. I am worried that if they do not keep direct care workers above minimum wage, that everyone that needs care will get either low quality or no care at all.
My Research Process:
Working in the direct care field made my research very easy. Not only did I have access to different articles at work I also has access to several experts in the field. The executive director agreed to an interview and the deputy executive director pointed me in the right direction of a few good articles and gave me some background on the subject at hand. I also looked hard using EBSCO host, a database, full of endless possibilities for articles to use.
Get Involved:
To get involved start following your local direct care agencies. Most of them will post "Action Alerts" giving you information and asking you to send letters to the local government, when an issue needs to be discussed. Ask what you can do to help your local direct care agency, they are always looking for volunteers.
